Exercise 5
Moving Forward
In the Range of Possibilities in Dining
Work the following exercise with your Dining Action Team. Initially, it will give you a framework to make the action plan needed to move forward in the range of possibilities. Re-think this exercise at least quarterly as a road map on your journey to optimizing dining for your residents.
TRADITIONAL facilities can choose from a variety of ideas, usually scheduled as special event days, as a place to start to move their facility forward into positive dining opportunities for residents.
TRANSFORMATIONAL facilities can consider a variety of systematic changes to create new ways of honoring their resident’s choice and respecting their individuality in dining.
NEIGHBORHOODS can begin to create home, cooking meals to order and including residents in the planning and preparation of their own meals.
HOUSEHOLDS are true homes where residents can direct their meals and their lives.
Study the following four pages of the range of possibilities in dining. On each table, find where you fall in the range of Organizational Structure, Staff-Elder Relationships, Choice and Decision Making, and Service Delivery Model. Consider the options others have implemented successfully, and discuss innovative possibilities to enhance the quality of your residents’ dining which could move you forward toward the true home level.
Start where you are. Dream big. Work hard to make your dreams reality.
