Self-expression that follows self-awareness is more likely to be honest, genuine, and congruent. We need to respect, accept, understand and take responsibility for our own reactions to others.
The awareness and expression process consists of a five-step cycle:
1. Data from the senses (“I see, hear, smell, touch, taste”) resulting in awareness of another
person, behavior, or environmental stimulus.
2. Interpreting the data - making sense of it (“I think....”);
3. Acknowledging our feelings resulting from that data (“I feel...”);
4. Forming our intention related to the data and to our thoughts and feelings (“I intend to....”) 5. Externally responding (“I am doing....”)
In other styles of communication (passive, aggressive, manipulative) we blame others or blame ourselves, or attempt to get others to accept blame.
