Procedures must be followed to prevent cross contamination.
Review policies related to infection control if observation, record review or staff interview indicate a problem with infection control.
Remember that lizards, turtles and hamsters carry salmonella and should not be in the home.
Engage the support and availability of a veterinarian.
Have all animals screened by vet for possible health and infection concerns prior to introduction to the facility.
Use animal medical records and care plans to track all immunizations, flea treatments, incidents, etc.
Have procedures in place to keep animals out of restricted areas during restricted times; kennels, enclosed areas and spray bottles of water can work well.
Know state regulations and ensure compliance through dialog with regulators prior to survey.
Audit records quarterly.
