competencies
Learning and teaching centered: Staff are encouraged to ask questions and look for new ways to serve the residents. They are open to others’ ideas and admit when they are wrong. Learning resources such as magazine or web articles, in-services, conferences, books, etc are valued throughout the organization.
Community building: Bonds between residents, staff and families are grown and strengthened. The organization works to connect individual households with other households in the facility as well as the community beyond the facility’s walls. Participation by all is encouraged and fostered.
Conflict facilitation: Conflict is seen as normal and healthy. Those involved are encouraged to honestly, openly and gently work through conflicts. When addressing conflict, the focus is on the behavior rather than on the person.
Interpersonal sensitivity and communication skills: Staff speak with elders in an adult-to-adult manner and are sensitive to embarrassing, upsetting or difficult situations, working to avoid or lessen the difficulty.
Dementia sensitivity: Staff treat a resident living with dementia as a person and work to make him/her feel good, even if just for a few moments. They show a basic understanding of the dementia process, both the biological aspects and the challenges the person faces maintaining a sense of well-being.
Organizational skills: Staff set priorities about work and pay attention to details. They establish, coordinate and follow up on schedules and deadlines.
