All Staff Now Required to Assist with Resident Activity Interests
Since 2006, the “new” interpretive guidelines for activities at Tag F248 call for basically all staff to support resident activity interests
– it no longer can be the role of activity or recreation personnel only. So what does that look like? Gone should be the days when staff members feel they could get in trouble for joining in an activity with a resident. Through the ages of nursing homes, most staff felt if they were talking to a resident and their boss walked by, they needed to jump up and get busy. We didn’t recognize that taking time for a resident is part of our job no matter our role in long-term care. In the Investigative Protocol for Tag F248 both a CNA and nurse responsible for the sample resident are to be asked what they do to support care planned activities for the resident when activity staff are not present. Make sure leadership makes it clear to staff that they should and are expected to engage in activity and conversation with elders.
