Go Beyond the MDS
Did you know you can care-plan practically anything you want about a person? Did you know you can go beyond the traditional MDS- generated care areas and that no regulation prevents you from doing this? In fact, federal Tag F272 Comprehensive Assessment states in its interpretive guidance: The facility is responsible for addressing all needs and strengths of residents regardless of whether the issue is included in the MDS or RAPs. So we have a big job in meeting the needs of each person and definite permission to go beyond the MDS.
The federal care plan requirement Tag F279 mandates a comprehensive care plan. Similarly, Tag F272 requires a comprehensive assessment. We simply suggest you do just that – be comprehensive in getting to know a person. Consider adding sections to your residents’ care plans to represent true meaning such as:
• What brings me meaning and purpose • What quality of life means to me
• Loneliness/helplessness/boredom - my
struggles
Creating these important sections will force you to discover what brings meaning to your householders and what can be done to attain it.
Community Learning Circle Question
What meaningful sections do you think we should add to enable the most comprehensive care plans for residents?
