Make Individual Pursuits Possible
“...we see we cannot live out for elders the meaning and purpose in their lives, or place those fulfillments gently in their laps. We must, however, create a climate in which they, themselves, can explore, develop and live out their own pursuits.”
– LaVrene Norton and Steve Shields, In Pursuit of the Sunbeam
Community Learning Circle Questions
Have we created home here?
Is this a place where each householder can “explore, develop and live out one’s own pursuits?”
And what can we do to make the house more conducive to each householder doing his or her own thing?
Read or hand out a card with large print
Some Hallmarks of Home:
– Householders initiate activities.
– Householders curl up on the sofa and fall asleep.
– Families use the kitchen and other household features.
– Householders, on their own, invite people (families or old friends, friends from other households) into their home.
– Staff members find minutes here and there to sit down with residents, to join in snacking, laughing or singing around a piano.
– Residents maneuver about the kitchen and exercise their “refrigerator rights.”
Community Learning Circle Questions
Hand out and read the Hallmarks of Home card and ask,
Do these things happen in our home? Why or why not?
“We want to continue working to make this happen; what is needed to make this more of a home for you?”
