“Activities” – What Are They Really?
“Activities” has been the word used to describe something people in a nursing home do lead by an activities professional. While throughout our lives we may be part of many events hosted or “put on” by others, we also fill the rest of our time with “activities” that are less formal. Some homes and professionals even use words like, “recreation,” “leisure,” “life enhancement” or “life enrichment,” but while organized activities can be fun and special if done well, those living and working in nursing homes need plenty of opportunity to be
active in normal, everyday ways. Helping in the kitchen, spending time with a cross-word puzzle and an impromptu game of Gin are as meaningful and necessary as holiday parties and special events. Living life to the fullest and in the way we choose is not something that is starred on a calendar. It’s just what we do. If “Whatcha doin’?” or “You got any plans for tomorrow?” are questions we can ask folks in nursing homes as often as any where else, we’re on the right track.
