Advantages of Reading
As an intellectual thing, a publication is prototypically a composition of these great length that it
requires a substantial investment of time to write and a still significant, though not so extensive,
investment of time to browse. In the restricted sense, a book is a self-sufficient section or part of a
longer composition, a use that reflects the fact that, in antiquity, long works had to be written on
several scrolls, and each scroll needed to be identified by the book it contained. Therefore, for
instance, each component of Aristotles Physics is called a book. In the unrestricted sense, a book
is the compositional whole of which these segments, whether known as books or chapters or
components, are parts.
The academic material in a physical publication does not need to be a makeup, nor be called a
novel. Novels can consist only of drawings, engravings, or photos, or such things as crossword
puzzles or cut-out dolls. In a physical book, the pages may be left blank or can feature an abstract
set of lines as service for continuing entries, e.g., an account book, an appointment book, an
autograph book, a laptop, a journal, or a sketchbook. Some bodily books are created with pages
thick and sturdy enough to support other physical objects, like a scrapbook or photograph album.
Books may be distributed in digital form as e-books and other formats.
Although in ordinary academic parlance a monograph is known to be a specialist academic work,
instead of a reference work on a single scholarly subject, in library and information science
monograph describes more broadly any non-serial publication complete in 1 volume (publication )
or a finite number of volumes (a novel like Prousts seven-volume In Search of Lost Time), in
contrast to serial publications like a magazine, journal, or newspaper. Novels are also sold
everywhere. Books may also be borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010,
roughly 130,000,000 different titles were released. In some wealthier nations, the sale of printed
books has decreased due to the increased usage of e-books.
In the 2000s, as a result of rise in availability of cheap handheld computing devices, the
opportunity to share texts through electronic means became an attractive option for media
publishers. The term e-book is a contraction of"electronic book"; it pertains to a book-length book
in electronic form. An e-book is generally made accessible through the world wide web, but also on
CD-ROM along with other forms. E-Books may be read either using a computing device with an
LED screen such as a traditional computer, a smartphone or a tablet computer; or by means of a
portable e-ink screen device known as an e-book reader, like the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble
Nook, Kobo eReader, or the Amazon Kindle. E-book readers attempt to mimic the experience of
reading a print book by employing this technology, because the displays onto e-book readers are
much less reflective.
