Celebrating achievements of six new
Five esteemed colleagues were presented with honorary life membership of our Society at the recent 2022 FSANZ conference in Sydney.
Each recipient has been a pathfinder and mentor in the field of assisted reproduction with career medical and scientific contributions that have advanced the possibility of millions of people around the world achieving their dreams of parenthood.
Peter Benny
Peter Benny was honoured with FSANZ Life Membership through his long and dedicated service to our Society and as a clinician, examiner and accreditation expert in assisted reproduction.
He graduated from the University of Otago in 1973 and two years later gained his Diploma in Obstetrics from the University of Auckland.
From 1975 to 1976, Peter was an O&G registrar at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital before being appointed to a similar position at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in the United Kingdom.
He returned to New Zealand in 1981 to become a Senior O&G Lecturer at the Wellington School of Medicine (1982-86) and Christchurch School of Medicine (1986-2009). He was Clinical Director of the IVF Service Unit of the Canterbury Health Board (1991-93) and Medical Director of IVF at Healthlink South (1993-96).
Peter served as a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist at Christchurch Women’s Hospital and Medical Director of Repromed Christchurch.
From 2010 to 2019 he was Medical Director of Monash IVF in NSW. Since 2011, he has been Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Nepean campus and is Medical Director of Next Generation Fertility in Sydney.
After being a Council Member and Medical Advisor of the New Zealand Infertility Society from 1990 to 1994, Peter became a Board Member of the Fertility Society of Australia from 1997 to 2007 serving as Vice-President from 2003 to 2007.

He chaired the Local Organising Committee of the FSA’s annual scientific meeting in Christchurch in 2005 and was Deputy Chair of the Society’s Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee from 2003 to 2007.
Peter was Chairman of the Examination Committee of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Chair of the HART Act Assisted Reproductive Technology Standards Group.
He has refereed for numerous scientific journals and contributed papers to many learned societies.
Michael Chapman
Michael Chapman
Michael Chapman has made outstanding clinical and academic contributions to reproductive medicine, and he has served as a dedicated Board member and President of our Society along with important service to other peak bodies in our professional field.
After graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1972, Michael headed to the United Kingdom to train in operative gynaecology. He gained his Doctorate of Medicine at the University of London and obtained membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in1979.
Michael was appointed consultant and senior lecturer at Guy’s Hospital in London and in 1991 became Professor of O&G at the hospital.
In 1994, Michael returned to Australia to take up his appointment as Professor of O&G at St. George Hospital (University of New South Wales) Kogarah, a role he continues to fulfill.
Michael served as Head of the UNSW School of Women’s and Children’s Health from 2005 to 2012, and with his close friend, Geoff Driscoll, he established the Masters of Reproductive Medicine that has been undertaken by many FSANZ members.
Between 2013 and 2018 he was Executive Clinical Director at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney.
