Canakkale Naval Museum

Çanakkale Naval Museum, covering an area of 72,318m2 in the city center, was founded on March 18, 1982 under the name of Çanakkale
Strait Command Museum. The museum served under Çanakkale Central Command until 1991 when it was changed into Military Museum
Directorate and gained the status of First-Class Military Museum on August 22, 2003 under the name of “Çanakkale Naval Museum
    Command”.

The museum complex is composed of Çimenlik Fortress, Fatih Mosque, Abdülaziz Mosque, Piri Reis Gallery, The Gallery of Sultan Mehmet

the Chief Admiral of that period Yakup Bey upon the order given by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror between the years 1462 and 1463 in the
narrowest part of the Strait. The foundation of the settlement in the city was first laid with the fortress that was called “Kala-i Sultaniye” at
first. The entrance tower of the fortress was added in 1541-1542 during the period of Süleyman the Magnificent.

The location of the museum is “The Çimenlik Bastion”, which had an important role within the defense system of the strait during 1915
Çanakkale Battles and where “Çimenlik Dressing Station” was also stationed. Çanakkale Naval Museum is an original battlefield. The replica
of the Heroic Minelayer Nusret was constructed in Gölcük Shipyard Command between 2009 and 2010 and the ship found her place within
the museum as a sailing museum ship.

The LCDR Nazmi Bey Gallery, where the exhibition of Republic Period Navy and the painting collection of the Military Painter Captain Mehmet
Ali LAGA can be seen, was built in 1927 during the First National Architecture Period. Two inscriptions can be found on the structure.
“Architect Arif Süleyman 1927” is written on the one at the right side and “Contractor Engineer Nafiz Nuri 1927” is written on the one at the
    left.

The museum ship ACAR was used by Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK for diplomatic services. The ship was built between 1936-1937 in Germany
and was opened to visitors in 2017. The library within the museum was rearranged in 2002 as Çanakkale Battles specialized library and was
developed in 2003 upon the order of the Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces. Today the library offers a rich, wide and up to date
