Bill Baran works with the
Ohio Society SAR to arrange
a Grave marking Ceremony
for his ancestors
First of two segments
By Bill Baran
This project involves the Ohio Society of SAR and the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS). Two of my Patriot Ancestors Captain John Boggs Sr. and his wife Mary (nee Williamson) widow of Robert Barr, married in Virginia (now West Virginia) 1785.
In their late 40’s or early 50’s they had 5 children together. Mary brought 4 and John brought 9 to the marriage but managed to go from Ohio County Virginia (Wheeling) to Pickaway County Ohio and start a new life in 1797 or 8. The family was in this location for a number of decades. My branch John Barr (son of Mary’s first Marriage) and Jane Boggs (daughter of John’s first marriage) left for Indiana in 1830’s.
In the Fall of last year I mentioned to the Ohio State Society that I would like to have a grave ceremony for these two Patriots. I men- tioned where the cemetery was located and they said they would check it out. They had a hard time finding it because of excessive trees and weeds. Once the site was found they arranged a scout troop to help clear it. Two weekends and 20 some people got it done. The graves will be reset and on June 4th 2022 we will have the ceremony. I plan to attend and will be dressed out as Robert Barr PA Frontier Ranger who lost his life in 1778 defending Fort Wallace and retreating to Fort Barr near New Derry, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
