                                                                1) The virus
                                                                approaches a cell
                                                                and attaches to
                                                                its membrane.
                                                                2) With a special
                                                                enzyme it pos-
                                                                sesses, the virus
                                                                pierces the cell
                                                                membrane and
                                                                injects its nucleic
                                                                acid (DNA or
                                                                RNA) into it.



                3) The viral DNA is incorporated into the cell's DNA, thereby bringing normal
                protein production to a halt.
                4) The cell starts producing new viruses according to the commands given by
                its now-altered DNA. The multiplied new viruses then break through the cell
                membrane and then migrate out toward new cells.
