There are 2,340 known species of these insects from the order Mantodea. The ma-
jority live in tropical and subtropical regions. Depending on the species, they
camouflage themselves as either green or dry leaves, brightly colored flowers,
thin branches or lichens. Mantises are the only known species of insect able to
turn their heads from side to side.
