This fossil was unearthed in the state of Michigan, USA, and is an
example resembling marble of stromatolitic materials belonging to
when life first appeared on Earth.
Marble is a metamorphosed form of limestone. The green color so
attractive to the eye is the result of serpentine, which forms when
there is a high level of magnesium in the limestone. 9
