Leaves are both plants’ power plants that manufacture energy, factories that produce
their food and also laboratories that carry out important reactions, and these laborato-
ries have been functioning perfectly for millions of years. The 50-million-year-old fos-
sil basswood leaf that has survived unchanged for 50 million years also has exactly the
same features as those living today.
