places of worship continue to exist. In the Qur'an, God explains
the importance of places of worship:
Those who were expelled from their homes without any right,
merely for saying, "Our Lord is God." If God had not driven some
people back by means of others, monasteries, churches, syna-
gogues and mosques, where God’s name is mentioned much,
would have been pulled down and destroyed. God will certainly
help those who help Him – God is All-Strong, Almighty. (Qur'an,
22:40)
Consequently, attacking places of worship, as we sadly see in
various places in the Islamic lands, is a terrible crime according to
the Qur'an, and is something that no Muslim can approve. As you
will see in the following pages, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
instructed churches and synagogues to be protected even in wartime
and thus protected the sacred spaces of the People of the Book. The
treaties he made are preserved today in some historical churches.
Places of worship of the People of the Book were protected also dur-
ing the time of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, and Muslims played a
role even in the construction and restoration of these places.
