Pleasant Words from the Gospel
To Be Generous and Avoid Parsimony
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be ar-
rogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain,
but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with
everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to
be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm
foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of
the life that is truly life [paradise]. (1 Timothy, 6:17-19)
If it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to
the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership,
let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it
cheerfully. (Romans, 12:8)
So I will very gladly spend for you [for God's sake] every-
thing I have and expend myself as well... (2 Corinthians,
12:15)
[Jesus:] "But I tell you who hear me:... If someone takes your
cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to every-
one who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you,
do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them
do to you... And if you lend to those from whom you expect
repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to
'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies,
do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get
anything back. Then your reward will be great... (Luke, 6:27-
35)
