In Darwin’s day, the cell was thought to be
just a sac of liquid. No one realized that it
was a very complex structure whose DNA
contained enough information to fill millions
of encyclopedia pages. Laboratories and the
equipment they employed were also very
primitive. Such branches of science as ge-
netics and biochemistry were virtually un-
known.
