of a lichen also displays the same conscious planning. Under diffi-
cult conditions or when they decide to multiply, lichens bud off a
component known as the soredia, which bears the parts and features
of both the algae and fungus. In order to multiply, it settles in a suit-
able place and produces a new lichen. If the lichen's algae die, or if
the fungal member of the lichen wishes to change its partner for
any reason, then it produces fungus spores that are carried by the
wind and find new algae for themselves in new places where they
have never been, under conditions of which they are unaware. 99
