A great many of the imaginary deities of Hinduism are described in writ-
ten texts as angry, hate-filled idols that perpetrate great slaughter and
delight in inflicting suffering. Kali, who is shown slicing up the body in
the picture, is, according to Hindu tradition, an imaginary goddess who
delights in slaughter. Hindus describe Kali with the titles of “protec-
tress” or “educator,” and heretically believe that new-born children can
partake of her power.
