A Call for Unity
… For this world in its present form is passing away. (1
Corinthians, 7: 31)
The Torah reveals that life on Earth is temporary,
that the love of material wealth and devotion to the
world is a grave mistake, and that believers should not let
themselves be led astray:
Whoever loves money never has enough money, and whoev-
er loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is
meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume
them. And what benefit are they to the owner, except to feast
his eyes on them? … wealth hoarded to the harm of its own-
er,... Naked a man comes from his mother's womb, and as he
comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he
can carry in his hand. (Ecclesiastes, 5: 10-16)
We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all of our
forefathers. Our days on Earth are like a shadow, without
hope. (1 Chronicles, 29: 15)
Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on
the day of the Lord's wrath. (Zephaniah, 1: 18)
And said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and
naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken
away; may the name of the Lord be praised." (Job, 1: 21)
Those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great rich-
es? No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a
ransom for him the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is
ever enough that he should live on forever and not see decay.
For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the sense-
less alike perish and leave their wealth to others. Their tombs
will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless
