Inset left: In Nebraska in 1919, a
                         group of some 5,000 whites
                         besieged the courthouse and cap-
tured a black prisoner and beat
                         him senseless before shooting
him more than 1,000 times and fi-
                         nally burning the body.
                         Large picture: Two young blacks,
                         Thomas Shipp and Abraham
Smith, were lynched in Indiana in
                         1930. Thousands of Whites armed
with baseball bats beat the two to
                         death before hanging them.
In the 1930s, the Ku Klux Klan be-
gan to grow. These lynchings are
just two of the countless examples
of the hatred and ruthlessness that
                         racism brings with it.
