                 We hold our arms out when someone throws a ball to us, also care-
            fully examining the ball’s angle of approach. Yet at the same time, the
            electrical signal reaching our eyes is being carried by the axons to the
            nerve cell, and transmitted from there to the brain for analysis. This way,
            we recognize everything we see, whether it is dangerous, and what kind
            of reaction we need to take. Again through the same communication sys-
            tem, the brain commands the arms to catch the ball. The details of the
            physical and chemical processes are so complicated they would fill
            many pages.


                 The Cerebellum That Harmonizes Actions

                 The cerebellum, that part of the brain responsible for balance and
            movement, consists of millions of neurons, despite representing only a
            tenth of the brain’s volume. This small piece of tissue constantly gathers
