If the brain were not cushioned by this
fluid but instead made direct contact with
the skull, it would be crushed under its own
weight, pressure would rise to very high
levels and severely affect its functioning.
Indeed, death could even result when pres-
sure forms in one of the brain’s vital centers.
Yet with the exception of incidences of sick-
ness, we never encounter such a problem. In
the condition known as hydrocephalus, for
example, fluid in the brain starts to accumu-
