clusively that in birds, only digits two, three and four, which corre-
spond to the human index, middle and ring fingers, develop, and we
have pictures to prove it,” said Feduccia . . . This creates a new prob-
lem for those who insist that dinosaurs were ancestors of modern
birds. How can a bird hand, for example, with digits two, three and
four evolve from a dinosaur hand that has only digits one, two and
three? That would be almost impossible.” 98
Feduccia and Nowicki investigated the developmental stages of os-
trich eggs and published the
results of their research in
the August 2002 edition of
the eminent German biology
journal Naturwissenschaften.
Feduccia stated that their re-
search proved that birds did
not evolve from dinosaurs,
summarizing their conclu-
sions in these words:
Whatever the ancestor of
birds was, it must have
had five fingers, not the
three-fingered hand of
theropod dinosaurs. 99
Scientists who examined the de-
velopment of the embryos in os-
trich eggs revealed that it was
impossible for bird’s wings to
have evolved from dinosaurs’
forelimbs.
