               NAUTILUS

Age: 113 to 97 million years old

Size: 1.9 centimeters (0.7 in) at the apex of its
oval, and 5.3 centimeters (2.1 in) across

               Location: Mahajanga, Madagascar

               Period: Cretaceous, Albian Stage

Looking at fossils, we see that there is no
               difference between creatures that lived
hundreds of millions of years ago and their
living counterparts. One such life form is the
nautilus, which has undergone no changes
since the moment they first came into
               existence. The 113- to 97-million-year-old
               fossil shown here illustrates this.
