Engineering in Nature

Butterflies of the genus Pieris ar-
range their wings at an angle to
collect the Sun's rays in the re-
gions of their bodies most in
               need of warmth. This form
               of behavior requires a
               knowledge of optics.
               Human beings use
               mirrors and lenses
               to focus rays
               onto a narrow
               area, as these
               butterflies
               do.

               The only reason for Pieris
               butterflies being capable
               of something that requires
               optical knowledge: God in-
               spires these insects with
               knowledge of how to warm
               themselves in the most ef-
               ficient way.
