The People's Republic of
China, founded in 1949, was
built upon totalitarian despotism,
intense bureaucracy, and a system of
state control of all resources and means of
production. The disasters brought about by
Mao's economic policies and his policies of re-
stricted famine led to enormous loss of life and a general
collapse. Mao's successor, Deng Xiaoping, hoped to put the economy
right by carrying out economic reforms and opened the country up to
