News reports concerning the
rapid rise of drug abuse fre-
quently appear in the world
media. According to one story
in Newsweek, at the end of 1997,
some 540,000 drug addicts in
the country applied for assis-
tance under programs to help
them overcome their depen-
dency. The figure now stands at
around 800,000. Three-quarters
of these people are under 25.
