Kazakhstan, which left the USSR in 1990, declared its
independence in 1991. It has rich oil and natural gas
reserves, and one-fifth of the former USSR's fertile
agricultural lands. The Baykonur (Leninsk) Space
Base, from which the first manned spaceship was
launched, remains within its borders.
