The expression turning up-
side down may be describ-
ing how the region was de-
stroyed in a violent earth-
quake. Indeed, the Dead
Sea (Lake Lut) is located in
an active seismic region.

In the same
verse, Allah re-
veals that He rained
down on them stones of
hard baked clay. Keller explains:
"The subsidence released valconic forces
that had been lying dormant deep down
along the whole lenght of the fracture. In
the upper valley of the Jordan near Bashan
there are still towering craters of extinct
volcanoes; great stretches of lava and
deep layers of basalt have been deposited
