   THE PROCESS
After the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, Laurel’s Board of Trustees and Head of School formed an Anti-Racist Task Force and engaged Equius Group—a Northeast Ohio consulting firm specializing in diversity, equity and inclusion, change management and women’s leadership—to help guide our work. During the 2020-2021 school year Equius Group conducted an assessment of the effectiveness of current programs, practices and policies to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how key Laurel stakeholders are experiencing the school climate. That work included the following:
1. AreviewofLaurel’scurrentDiversity,Equity&Inclusionpracticesthat included employee and student demographics; recruitment and retention policies; and procedures and professional development measured against effective practices.
2. A qualitative “temperature check” via interviews and listening sessions with students, faculty, staff and parents.
3. A survey for faculty, staff and students.
4. An assessment of the School’s current state capturing both assets and challenges related to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and where the organization sits on the continuum toward becoming Anti-Racist.
5. Recommendations for future school goals, projects, initiatives and metrics to track progress for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
After reviewing Equius Group’s report and in consultation with the DEIB Board Committee and the Anti-Racist Task Force, the Board of Trustees developed and approved our path forward, which is outlined in detail on page six.
