Helpful Hints for Splinting – Part 2
• Take advantage of the transparency of white Aquaplast® and of the pastel colors in the WatercolorsTM range. When molding directly against the skin, watch for blanching, which indicates potential pressure areas, and relieve these areas while contouring.
• Wrap-and-tack technique – traditional non-stick versions of Aquaplast and Watercolors have just enough surface tack to produce a light bond if deliberately pressed together when soft. The bond can be popped open when cool. Ideal for forming gauntlet and circumferential splints such as thumb spica and elbow splints. For a permanent bond, use Aquaplast Original (page 470) or splint solvent, or scrape the surface of the splint prior to bonding the softened material.
• Pinch-and-cut technique–pinch edges together and trim with scissors to seal them for seamless finger cylinders and toe caps. This technique can be used with traditional Aquaplast-T and Watercolors products.
