SON (SMITH) John Henry

Born 26th October 1878 in Kings Cliffe, John Henry was the
son of Emma Henson and Isaiah Smith. He was the brother of
William Henson and was mentioned in William’s army records
as being his next- of-kin and being in the Lincolnshire Regiment.
Using his father’s name of Smith, he joined the 1st Battalion
Lincolnshire Regiment on 20th May 1895. He was only 16 years
old.
In the next few years he served in Malta, Egypt, India, and Aden
and was involved in the Battle of Albara. He demobilised on
21st September 1913, just a year before the Great War began
and went on to the army reserve.
We have no record of his service in WW1 but he would have
been recalled to his regiment when war was declared.

William was born on 5th April 1882 in Kings Cliffe to Emma
Henson and Isaiah Smith.
In 1861 26-year-old John Henson, his wife Elizabeth and their
three children, including their eldest daughter Emma, were living
at Bridge Street, Kings Cliffe. The family moved to Apethorpe in
the mid 1860s where three more children were born.
Tragically in 1866 John dies leaving Elizabeth to bring up the six
children. By 1871 she has moved to Workhouse Lane in Kings
Cliffe and was still there in 1881. By now they have been joined
by Elizabeth’s widowed mother, her niece, plus a grandchild,
