was mentioned in the letter to the Stamford & Rutland News,
from H E Dixon (Senior) as one of the Kings Cliffe Men who
joined the New Army in 1914.
LATTIMORE Albert Edward
(As Albert Smith) Private 9352 2nd Battalion,
Northamptonshire Regiment.
Albert was born in 1873 in Kings Cliffe. Albert’s mother,
Sibberina Smith (nee Booth), married Enoch Smith in 1873.
Enoch had previously lived on Apethorpe Road, Kings Cliffe
with his parents.
Enoch and Sibberina had four children, the last, Eliza, being
born in 1879. Shortly after her birth, her father died aged just 30,
leaving Sibberina to bring up the children.
In 1881 she and the children are living at Workhouse Lane in
Kings Cliffe. Around this time she appears to have started a
relationship with John Lattimore, who is the son of William and
Harriett Lattimore of The Butts in Kings Cliffe.
By 1891 John Lattimore is living as a lodger with Sibberina at
Maltings Terrace, Kings Cliffe. Two of the older children have
moved out, possibly to other relatives, leaving just Beatrice and
Eliza with their mother. However Sibberina has now had four
more children – John 1883, Sarah 1885, Rose 1887 and Ada
1889, all registered with the surname Smith.
In 1896 John Lattimore and Sibberina marry and by 1901 the
four youngest children have all adopted their father’s surname
of Lattimore. By this date there are two more children in the
family – Fred 1896 and Albert 1894.
In early April 1911, Albert Edward (now) Lattimore was living with
his sister’s family and working as a horseman on a farm. This
arrangement did not last for long, as around July of that year he
presented himself at Peterborough recruitment office and joined
the Regular Army with the Northamptonshire Regiment.
We can imagine the problems that the army would have with a
recruit calling himself Lattimore and his birth certificate saying
Smith, so it may have been expediency which caused him to
revert to his original surname, at least for official forms.
