LY Eugene George
Private 59635 West Yorkshire Regiment
Eugene was the son of Cornelius and Emma Tully, born in Sligo,
Ireland, on 24th September 1898, when Cornelius was working
there.
In 1911 he is 12 years old and living with his family at Marine
Parade, Hythe, in Kent.
Eugene’s family moved to Kings Cliffe in about 1915, when his
father came to run the local gas works.
There is no Eugene Tully in the military medal records, but there
is a George Tully in the West Yorks. People are often listed
by their second Christian name, if that is the name they were
commonly known by.
There is a report in the Stamford & Rutland News of 17th April
1918 which reads:-
“Killed in Action – The distressing tidings have come to hand of the
death in action on March 25th of Private E G Tully, 19, of ‘Rockbourne’
West Yorks Regiment. Intimation of his death, received on Monday
from his brother, was confirmed by the War Office on Wednesday (this
would have been 10th April 1918). The deceased was well known
and respected and previous to enlistment took an active part in the
management of his father’s gas works.”
Cornelius had only one son with the initials E G – this was
Eugene George Tully.
Eugene George Tully in fact died in 1934!!!!
The probate report reads:-
“Eugene George Tully, of Gas Works House, Church Stretton, Salop
died 25 Apr 1934. Adm. to Sidney James Britiffe Tully, gas engineer.
Effects £24-13-4d.”
Sidney James Tully was the eldest son of Cornelius, who was
described as a gas engineer in the 1911 census.
It seems implausible that there was another boy in the family
with the initials E G and born around 1898/9. There were already
children born into the family in 1895, 1897, 1898 and 1900. It
would be biologically impossible to fit another one in!
