POLE Henry William
Probably Private 3536 Northamptonshire Regiment
Private 576752 Labour Corps
Private 238118 Worcester Regiment
Henry was born in 1872 in Rollesby, Norfolk, the son of Henry
and Ann Walpole and the elder brother of Frederick George
Walpole.
At some point he met Mary Elizabeth Giddings of Kings Cliffe,
married her in 1907 and came to live in the village. In 1911 they
were living at Apethorpe Road, Kings Cliffe and had two small
children.
He was mentioned in the letter to the Stamford & Rutland News
as one of the Kings Cliffe men who had joined up in 1914.
His service records did not survive so we have no details of his
war but we do know that he survived and died in Stamford in
1928 aged 46.

WEATHERINGTON Elsie Lillian
Elsie was born 20th March 1897, the daughter of William Henry
(called Henry) and Ann Margaret (nee Gaudern) Weatherington.
She was born at “Tristan” on West Street, Kings Cliffe.
Elsie’s grandparents were Henry and Elizabeth Weatherington,
who lived in Apethorpe. There were six children in this family
in 1881 – Alice born 1867, William Henry (Elsie’s father) born
1869, Mary Ann born 1872, Lilian born 1873, George born 1877
and Vida born 1879.
About a year after the 1881 census, in May 1882, Henry
Weatherington died, aged just 36, leaving Elizabeth to bring up
the six children.
In 1891 grandmother Elizabeth is still in Apethorpe (the surname
is spelt Weathington in the census), with William Henry working
as sawyer, Mary as a dressmaker, George as an agricultural
labourer and Vida is still a scholar.
In 1896 William (Elsie’s father) marries Ann Margaret Gaudern.
The marriage is registered in Oundle.
Elsie is born a year later in 1897.
