Arthur was the son of Frederick and Lucy Brown and was born
in Crowland on 22nd November 1897.
His father was a butcher and was born in Kings Cliffe, but in
1901 he had a butchers shop in Lewisham, SE London. By
1911, when Arthur was 13, they had moved back to be the local
butchers in Kings Cliffe.
Arthur worked in the family business after leaving school and
went on to the military reserve in 1916. He was not called up,
however, until 14th July 1917 when he joined the Royal Navy.
At that time the Royal Navy was the largest navy in the
world with over 1,800 fighting ships (not including armed
