PMAN Henry William (Harry)
Possibly Private 15965 Suffolk Regiment
Born in 1883 in Apethorpe, Harry was the eldest son of Joseph
and Eliza Chapman of Bridge Street, Kings Cliffe.
He followed his father into the trade of a wheelwright.
In 1907 he married Annie Cunnington, a local girl, and they
eventually had seven children. They lived on Park Street, Kings
Cliffe.
He joined up either late in 1915 or in 1916 when the compulsory
draft came in.
We have no record of his military career, except the data on his
medal card, but Jim Brown (butcher in Kings Cliffe) said that he
was gassed in the war and had poor breathing, causing him to
be frequently off work. Family records say that he was released
from the army early, as his skills as a wheelwright were required
in the war effort at home.
His death is recorded in Oundle in 1950 aged 67.

CHAPMAN Herbert Raymond
Possibly Private 123849 Royal Army Medical Corps – or
Private 24213 Suffolk Regiment
Bert was born late 1893 in Apethorpe and was the son of Joseph
and Eliza Chapman of Bridge Street, Kings Cliffe.
An article in the Stamford and Rutland News of 26th Dec 1917,
reports :-

“Bert Chapman, son of Mr Joseph Chapman, of Kings Cliffe is in
hospital in France, and has been seriously wounded. Mr Chapman
received a telegram stating that if any relatives wished to see him
they were to go at once. Miss Ida Chapman (sister) started off as
soon as possible. A letter, which arrived later, announced the nature
of the wounds: left arm smashed from below the shoulder and finger
off right hand. Miss Chapman wires that the shattered arm has been
amputated.”

Herbert’s military records did not survive the WW2 war, but we
believe that he did survive.
