FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Coquina Family,
Coquina has the distinction of having a wonderful, hard-working staff and extremely dedicated volunteers. Each year, Brevard
Schools Foundation sponsors the ABC Awards to honor outstanding contributions from those who help strengthen the quality
of public education in Brevard County. Each year, these awards begin at the school level when co-workers and peers vote for
the people in their school who they feel are the ones who have exhibited the best dedication, enthusiasm, and support at
their individual schools.
This year’s winners really do make a difference in the lives of our students every day. At the beginning of every workday,
they are anxious to get started. They feel energized by what they do. They feel they are making a difference and I know that
they are.
TEACHER OF THE YEAR - ALICIA MCMAHON
Ms. McMahon has been with Coquina as a special education teacher since the beginning of the 17-18 school year. Her love
for her students is evident by their excitement to come to school and spend their day with her. She has a passion for teaching
and understands her role in the lives of her students. Ms. McMahon gives of herself to her students and their parents, in and
out of the classroom. She has the respect of the entire school and is very deserving to be Coquina’s Teacher of the Year!
EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR - WILLIAM ‘SHANE’ MOODY
Mr. Shane as our students and staff know him is our head custodian and just joined the Coquina family in September of 2018.
In that short time, Mr. Shane has become a mentor to many of our students. He is patient, kind and is a constant support for
teachers, students, and staff. He leads by example and is loved by all. Mr. Shane has become an indispensable member of
the Coquina family.
EMERGING TEACHER OF THE YEAR - MEGAN BARNES
Ms. Barnes is a 5th grade teacher at Coquina and this will be her third year at Coquina. In her second year, Ms. Barnes was
already stepping up to the plate by taking a newly hired teacher under her wing. Her students, parents and colleagues all see
her belief that every child can be successful if we all work together to help them discover their talent and set goals to achieve
their dreams. We could not do without Ms. Barnes at Coquina!
ROOKIE TEACHER OF THE YEAR - CECILIA QUIST
Ms. Quist is currently a 3rd grade teacher at Coquina and originally began with us as an intern. She stepped into a classroom
setting and began immediately providing support to students and families. Ms. Quist seeks out growth opportunities to
improve her professional skills and works with students, parents and colleagues to provide opportunities for every child to
gain success. Coquina was very lucky that Ms. Quist came our way!
VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR - KELLY DOWNY & DI LITES
What can you say about people who give of themselves with no thought of gain or compensation other that the respect and
gratitude of others? Coquina cannot say ‘Thank You’ enough to these two ladies. They drop everything and come anytime
we need them and we are grateful that they have chosen Coquina to share their talents and generosity. We could not do
without them and we are appreciative for them every day.
Please join me in congratulating and thanking these wonderful, generous people who give so much of themselves to Coquina!
Thank you for your continued support in the education of your child!
