Rise of the Machine From the moment when humans rst existed,we have been on a quest to make life easier by inventing and adopting more technology. Ever since the rst industrial revolution, machines have been steadily replacing manual labour. The advent of the fourth industrial revolution presently has sped up the phenomenon considerably. Today, computers can work harder, play harder and perform better than humans can. So, where does that leave us? Special Skill Sets The obvious way forward is to cultivate skills that cannot be replaced by machines. Enter 21st Century Education. A 21st century education will provide students with the arsenal they need to succeed in this ever-changing world. The key is not how much knowledge they need to accumulate but how to make sense of and manipulate this knowledge to their bene t. Underscoring this is Emotional Intelligence which, unsurprisingly, has been gaining hype in recent years. According to the Partnership for 21st Century Learning in the US, in all their learning, students should be equipped with four essential skills: • Creativity, i.e. coming up with new and innovative ways of thinking • Critical thinking, i.e. analysing details presented • Communication, i.e. the ability to share information with others • Collaboration, i.e. working together in a team to come up with greater solutions
