The next question to ponder is: what are the ECAs that matter? For one, parents need to understand the eld in which their child passionate about or interested. This is something that parents should consider when deciding on the right school. If one has not developed an interest in any speci c area, parents will need to see if the school provides an extensive range of activities for children to explore their interests and discover their passions. If one has passion in a particular activity, then does the school provide exclusive coaching for it? Also, what is the school’s level of emphasis on ECAs? It is also important to determine whether these activities are relevant to the subjects or career a child wants to pursue in future. Then it comes to the four tiers which determine the quality of students’ involvement in ECAs. This will demonstrate the signi cance of their involvement as well as the impact they are able to bring to the community. TIER 1 TIER 2 TIER 3 TIER 4 30 • Rare & demonstrates exceptional achievements • National recognition Beyond the Classroom • Shows high level of leadership • A little more common than Tier 1 • Regional competitions • Demonstrates student participation outside classroom • Minor leadership positions • Displays student commitment • Most common activities: hobby-like interests • General membership • Least impactful
