Why Hopwell?
• An economic pivot point between the Nottingham and Derby city economies, with their universities, diverse employment and community provision. Hopwell will face in both directions, maximising the opportunity for the community that lives and works there.
• Facilitates the re-imagining of Ockbrook and Borrowash, as integrated neighbourhoods of a larger, sustainable, strategic settlement.
• Lies on the most direct, strategic corridor between the two cities. Can be fundamental in the “roads renaissance”, as the vehicle fleet electrifies, and driving shifts from being “bad” to being environmentally responsible. The A52 and M1 will recover their importance as sustainable movement corridors. Hopwell can influence this renaissance by sitting on a strategic waypoint between N-S and E-W corridors.
• Near enough to HS2 to care – far enough away to stand alone. The HS2 corridor at Toton is close enough to be an advantage, but not so close that Hopwell depends on it. HS2 is years away – and may still be abandoned. This doesn’t matter - Hopwell will be a “pearl on the string” between the two cities anyway.
• It is, therefore, the most sustainable opportunity to capitalise on growth.
• And – of course, it meets local housing needs.
