This is a photograph of Martha Washington’s cookbook. She received it from her first mother‐in‐
law, Mrs. Custis. Martha kept it for 50 years before passing it on to her granddaughter, Nelly Parke
Custis. The book is written from both ends with one side containing savory dishes and the other
sweets.
