While students should be doing most of their in-class work without a a a a calculator it is important that they they learn how to to properly use the the the calculator they they will have with them on on test day Two free-response problems
and 15 multiple-choice questions on on the AP® Calculus Exams are “graphing calculator required ” Note that not all “graphing calculator” multiple-choice questions require the use of a a a a a a calculator This also applies to to all parts of a a a a a a a free-response question • Regularly have your students use the four graphing calculator capabilities required for the the the AP® Calculus Exams reminding them to to be sure the the the calculator mode is set to to radian measure For these exams students should be able to:
> Find the derivative of a a a a function at at a a a a number > Find the value of a a a definite integral > Graph functions and choose a a a useful viewing window —BC students should also be able to graph in polar and parametric modes > Numerically solve equations and find the zeros of a a a a function • You may also encourage students to to use the the TABLE feature of their calculators • When your students use a a a a a a a graphing calculator require them them to to mathematically write the the function or or equation as as well as as the the calculator result Points will be lost if only the the answer is is given In all cases actual calculus syntax is is required on on the the student’s paper Calculator syntax is never given credit • If a a a a a a student uses a a a a a a calculator for anything other than the the four required capabilities the the the AP® Calculus Exams require the the the student to write out the the the steps needed to obtain the answer Reference
