catching big billfish. He’s fished for grander Black Marlin on the Great Barrier reef all the way to Florida for enormous Broad-bill. Martin is happiest when he is fishing, and his lovely wife Elaine is always at his side. The couple have been coming to the lodge for many years and it was great to see them back. Martin had some fantastic fishing with Capt. Jose onboard the Miss Scandia. The highlight was having Guy and Jessica Harvey release his 500 lb Black Marlin with a PSat tag.
Dr. Guy Harvey and
his talented daughter,
Jessica, returned in
February to help us with
a tagging initiative we
are conducting with the
Guy Harvey Research
Institute, the Guy Harvey
Ocean Foundation,
Nova Southeastern
University, and Tropic
Star Lodge. They tagged
seven Black Marlin
while they were here
all with PSat tags which
will stay on the fish for
a year before popping
off. During the billfish
season, they also
tagged 10 Blue Marlin
and 10 Pacific Sailfish. The goal of the research initiative was to tag 10 of each species and then monitor how they interact and where they go so we can learn more about this incredible fishery and these exquisite animals. Jessica captured some incredible footage of Marlin. Thank you to both Guy and Jess for all they do for our fishery and ocean conservation around the world. Guy Harvey wears many hats. One of those, is that he is a world- famous artist and while here he painted an incredible piece of a Black Marlin chasing down Rainbow Runners. The piece was put up for sale through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation with the sole purpose of directly funding the satellite tagging program. This was the first piece ever for sale at Tropic Star Lodge.
Douglas and Shelly Sayer brought the entire family from Idaho for a Christmas adventure in the jungle. It was great having all the kids and grandkids join us and seeing them have fun at the pool and playing on the beach and in the jungle. The grandkids Lily, Max and Wade all had fun on the boat with Dorado and seeing Marlin fought and released. Seven-year-old, Wade, even got to release his first billfish, a Sailfish! 3-year-old, Louden, and 5-year- old, Warner, also got in on the action releasing their first Dorado!
We are very proud of our little anglers.
The Murtland and Atkinson families joined us for Christmas and fished a three-boat fleet. Gregory Murtland released his first Black Marlin of 400 lb along with his son who also released a Black Marlin of the same size fishing on board Miss Alaska. Sarah Howley released some notable firsts such as her first Marlin and Sailfish. The group experienced fantastic fishing throughout the week; catching and
releasing a ton of Dorado and releasing over 30 billfish between their three boats! We look forward to seeing the gang back for their next fishing adventure.
Ned Brown, from San Francisco, is an avid fisherman and has fished with us many times in the 90’s and has been making his biennial trips in more recent years. It has been a lot of fun getting to share stories with someone who is so passionate about fishing and conservation. Ned released a Black Marlin and Ryan Logan, from Nova Southeastern University and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, successfully put a PSat tag on the fish. In a year’s time, we will know invaluable data on the fish like where that fish goes as well as its depths. Well done Ned!
