and love being out on the water. It was wonderful getting to spend time with them. Both men were brave enough to try some deep dropping with great results. They brought home Grouper for everyone and we all enjoyed some beer batter Grouper and French fries on a long family-style table. The gents also released a massive Cubera Snapper and Marlin. On one of the days, Richard also took some great shots of a giant Whale Shark up close next to the boat.
Randy and Maddy Sook from Minnesota visited the lodge for some father daughter time on the water. The Sook family has stayed with us before and it was super getting to see Maddy and her dad back. The father daughter duo love fishing and the outdoors. They were telling us all about the ice fishing they do back home and we really want to try it one day. While with us on this trip, Randy and Maddy had loads of fun fishing inshore where they managed to really rack up their species count. On one day they managed to catch 15 African Pompano along with Roosterfish and many other species. Randy unfortunately got a little beaten up by some big mean Cubera Snapper, but he will be coming back for revenge next time. Offshore they also released Sailfish and had their hands full with some Yellowfin Tuna on spinning gear.
At the end of April, we hosted our first Inshore Fishing School. Many guests come to us each year with goals of catching either Roosterfish or Cubera snapper on poppers, or want to try their hand jigging the deeper pinnacles for Almaco Jacks, snapper and whatever else might come up from the depths. So we got together a few of our friends who happen to be professional guides and put together the inshore fishing school to help anglers achieve their dreams and hone their skills. The camaraderie that was shared and friendships made during the clinic was just incredible. The guests all got to improve their fishing knowledge in one form or another and make new friends. In all the clinic was a huge success, with anglers ticking a lot of their bucket lists including for a few people the very rare Pacific Tarpon, while other got to release their first Cubera snapper and Roosterfish.
Mike Marcus brought his daughter, Sydney, for an adventure in the jungles of Panama. Sydney was in her element in the jungle
enjoying the birds and all the creatures that one can find from the Jesus Lizards that run across the streams to the giant moths and Rhino Beetles. The father-daughter duo fished with Capt. Lorenzo on Miss Canada. Sydney caught loads of Yellowfin Tuna and also released Sailfish and a beautiful Roosterfish, her first one of 40 lb.
Mark Davis, host of Big Water Adventures T.V., was down in the beginning of June to film his latest show. He fished for three days on Miss Island Star with Capt. Gavilan. I was fortunate enough to fish with him and it was an absolute blast. We successfully set satellite tags in Sailfish, chased down Yellowfin Tuna on surface lures and fought more than enough Dorado buy throwing lures at the floating debris that we find this time of year offshore.
Court James brought his son, Court James Jr., to Tropic Star for an unforgettable father-son fishing trip. The father and son super team were bubbling with boundless excitement from the time they touched down at PiƱas Bay airport. Fishing and having a great time were the priorities and it showed with the huge grins, high fives and flags flying high. On one day they caught a 50 lb Dorado and came back flying ten Sailfish flags flying on their outriggers.
