means they can follow a spoor trail over 15 hours old. Human trackers track
by visually picking up on marks on the ground and surrounding bush which
becomes near impossible when tracking on hard or rocky ground. Poachers
will also use tactics to cover their tracks such as wearing socks over their shoes,
using brush to wipe away their spoor and even paying cattle farmers to move
a herd of cattle along the fence where they exit to mask over their trail. These
measures, however, do not impede on the hounds’ ability to follow a trail since
they rely on scent and not visual marks. Introducing a canine component to the
Karingani field ranger force significantly contributes to increasing the tracking
capacity of our rangers and aids in the protection of wildlife from poachers.
