Page 4 - Down On His Luck
P. 4
“Sir, you’ve been sitting at this table alone the entire evening. In fact, some of us were
wondering if you were crazy or in mourning, talking to an empty chair. You ordered two
Thanksgiving dinners and dessert. Some of the other customers became uncomfortable and
left. You really ticked off the manager.”
Henry looked and to his surprise, the food that he knew he saw Charlotte eating was
sitting untouched across from him. Embarrassed and dumbfounded, he stood, reached in his
pocket for his wallet and handed the waiter his credit card. “That’ll be all, just bring the bill.”
The waiter rolled his eyes and took the credit card.
When Henry reached for his coat, he tripped over something. It was a briefcase that he
hadn’t seen before. He picked it up and on the tag, was his name. When the waiter came back
he grabbed his credit card and ran for the door.
Outside he looked down the street and there was no sign of Charlotte. He found a pay
phone and told his brother he was heading home before coming over. He had to know what
was inside or it would haunt him all night.
At his apartment he opened the briefcase and inside was a numerous amount of crisp
new one-hundred-dollar-bills totaling a lot of money he imaged, that would help support him
and his brother. Also, inside, was a note from Charlotte.
Dear Henry,
Your unfortunate situation has changed.
Your Guardian Angel, Charlotte
It was a Thanksgiving he’d never forget.
